The Photographer

My interest in photography started at an early age. As a young boy, growing up in Scotland, I took great pleasure in the images presented in the National Geographic that would whisk me away to exotic and magical places. I would marvel at rediscovered cities found in the jungles of South America, vibrant bazaars in the Middle East or majestic polar bears in frozen Arctic. I was in awe of images of daring climbs in the high places of the earth or of cavers exploring hidden caverns.

From grand scenic landscapes to intimate portraits I was often transported to a world of beauty that was so alien to my surroundings. These photographic essays provided an escapism and a thirst for travel and evoked a curiosity of the unknown and foreign.

After graduating University, my career gave me the opportunity to expand my horizons through travel. Among the countries I have visited I consider myself fortunate to have trekked in the Khumbu region of Nepal, experienced the cultural melee of India, explored the temples and tombs of Egypt, and immersed myself wilderness of Canada’s Yukon Territory.

With the advent of high quality DSLR cameras and the digital darkroom my nascent photography skill began to grow and a casual interest has now become a passion. I like the challenge of finding interesting compositions in the everyday scenes.

I now make my home in Ottawa, Canada, where each season brings a different challenge, both photographically and environmentally and provides a wonderful canvas for landscape images. Somewhat perversely perhaps I delight in what most people would consider to be poor weather as it often makes from a more compelling image lifting the mundane to the extraordinary.

The Images

What do I look for in a photograph or a composition? Well for me and probably for most photographers it’s all about making an emotional connection with the viewer. I do that by shooting when the light is at is most dramatic or the weather conditions evoke a mood of fury or calm. One of the techniques I particularly enjoy is long exposure twilight photography that can deliver an almost other worldly feel yet still maintains the integrity of the location.
